Try Something New – Gardening Group

Alzheimers societyThe Gardening Group is open to both people with dementia and carers in Llandeilo Community Allotment as part of the ‘Try Something New’ project.

We will be meeting every Monday afternoon from 1:30pm – 3:30pm at the Community Allotment. We have 3 raised beds we can work on and use of the poly tunnel if the weather is bad.

The group is free of charge and people with dementia can attend on their own provided they do not have any personal care needs. Likewise carers can also come on their own or people with dementia and carers can come along together. We have a tutor to lead the groups as well as a Group Coordinator present to support. It’s informal and relaxed in a lovely environment. I will forward a poster across to you asap.

The “Try Something New” Activity Groups will run across the whole of South West Wales. The project aims to support people with dementia and their carers to live in a supportive environment by delivering a programme of meaningful learning opportunities in a friendly, safe, non -threatening and non-judgmental environment.

The aims of the project are to:

  • Increase the confidence and improve the skills of people with dementia and their carers by enabling them to participate in adult community learning courses and contributing to the implementation of dementia supportive communities.
  • Make people living with dementia feel less isolated by having opportunities to participate in community activities thus improving social networking and reducing feelings of social isolation and loneliness.
  •  Develop partnerships to create communities that will be more inclusive of people with dementia with higher levels of public awareness and improved understanding of dementia.
  •  Local statutory and voluntary agencies will have increased awareness of the barriers experience by people living with dementia. Dementia supportive communities will be more inclusive of people with dementia thereby improving their ability to remain independent, experience increased social interaction and have increased confidence.
